State Media Reports 200 Militants Killed in Central Somalia

Somali state-run media reports that the army killed at least 200 al-Shabab militants Sunday in central Somalia. Al-Shabab said it killed five soldiers in the same area.

According to Somali National Television (SNTV), government troops and local militia groups engaged in a gunfight with hundreds of al-Shabab fighters in Ji’ibow village, 25 kilometers from Bula Burde town, Hiiraan region.

The security forces and allied militias received a tip-off from the locals about the movement of hundreds of al-Shabab fighters planning to take control of lost territories.

While visiting the coastal town of Adale Monday, about 200 kilometers from the Ji’ibow village HirShabelle federal state president Ali Gudlawe said that he wants security forces to speed up the operations and liberate more areas from the militant group in the Middle Shabelle region.

Gudlawe urged the people and security forces to brace themselves for more battles against al-Shabab in order to liberate the country from the group.

In August the government launched an offensive to liberate villages and towns from al-Shabab. The authorities say they have captured at least dozen villages.
