Somalia is one of 20 nations at risk of a worsening humanitarian crisis in 2023, according to the yearly International Rescue Committee (IRC) Emergency Watchlist.

Drought and ongoing conflict in Somalia have destroyed the lives and livelihoods of more than 7.8 million people.

The 20 countries, 11 of which are in Africa, account for 13% of the global population and 80% of people who are food insecure. They are also responsible for 89% of civilian deaths in armed conflict.

IRC says conflict continues to be a major contributor in humanitarian crises, accounting for 80 percent of humanitarian needs.

Somali militant group Al-Shabaab has made it difficult for aid agencies to access millions living in areas under their control.

The government began a military operation in August to expel Al-Shabaab from the central regions.

Experts warn that the offensive would intensify in the coming months causing more suffering.
