The Somali government says more clan militias have joined the fight against Al-Shabaab in the Middle Shabelle region.

The clan militias said they were ready to fight the insurgent group to liberate more areas around River Shabelle.

The recruitment of the local militias came after President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud visited troops fighting Al-Shabaab in Galmudug and Hirshabelle federal states over the weekend. The president also visited freed areas from the group and vowed to eliminate them from the group.

In August, the government and allied militias launched a military offensive targeting Al-Shabaab-controlled villages and towns.
