The president of Somalia disbanded the judicial service commission and the anti-corruption commission. President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud directed the cabinet to reconstitute the commissions in a decree issued on Sunday.

The independent judicial service is tasked to oversee the function of the judiciary and the recruitment of judges.

Previous members of parliament approved the two commissions in November 2020. The establishment of the independent commissions was approved by 145 lawmakers.

The opposition groups and politicians rejected the formation of the commissions and argued the caretaker government led by former president Mohamed Abdullahi Farmaajo had no mandate to form such independent agencies. Previous government mandate ended in February 2021.
