A Somali military court has sentenced Fartun Abdirashid Hassan, the wife of the leader of the Islamic State (IS) branch in Somalia, to eight years in prison for being a member of the terror group and her role in facilitating money transfers.

The terror convict the wife of IS leader in Somalia Abdukadir Moalim Mumin was arrested in March 2022. Officials say she was using different names to evade capture.

The Somali military court has found that Fartun Abdirashid Hassan had a close working relationship with the IS terror group and served as a point of contact between the IS Somalia branch and the IS global network. She also provided a safe haven for Islamic State members in Mogadishu.

In August 2022, the Federal Government of Somalia launched a multi-pronged war against al-Shabab militants, leading to the liberation of dozens of towns.

The government has also made progress in disrupting the financial networks of terrorist organizations.
