Somali Forces Kill 200 Al-Shabab Fighters in Week-long Offensive

Somali officials say more than 200 al-Shabab militants were killed during a week-long military operation in the South and Central regions of the country.

Minister for Information Daud Aweis said government forces intensified the war against al-Shabab in Galmudug, Hirshabelle, Jubaland and Southwest regional states.

During the operation, some members of the group, including a commander and a bomb expert, surrendered to the government, according to Aweis.

Al-Shabab has been losing ground in recent months, but it continues to pose a threat and carry out attacks on government forces and civilians.

The current government, led by President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, has declared war on the al-Qaeda-linked terror group that has been fighting the government for 15 years.
