Somali military officials said Friday more than 100 Al-Shabaab members were killed in Thursday’s clashes with the government forces and local militias in the Hiran region.

Somali national army spokesperson Abdullahi Ali Anod said the militant group lost a large number of fighters in Garas Magan and El Hariri areas.

“The fighting had been going on for many hours and the war in El Hariri ended at 5:30 in the evening. On the frontlines, we counted 100 dead Al Shabaab fighters,” said Anod.

The military official also said they received aerial support in their offensive to push the insurgent group out of the area after days of fighting.

Somali authorities urged the local population to back the government’s efforts to defeat the insurgent group.

The military victory comes just days after the militant group carried out two car bomb attacks in Mogadishu, killing more than 120 people and injuring 300.
