Somali officials from four regional federal member states are in Garbaharey town in the Gedo region to begin a reconciliation process that will pave the way for elections.

The ministers from Puntland, HirShabelle, Galmudug and South West will meet with the local leaders, clan elders, women, and youth to resolve the conflict between the region and Jubaland federal state leader Ahmed Madobe. Gedo is one of the three provinces of Jubaland federal state.

The reconciliation process in the Gedo region begins this week as the country prepares for the parliamentary and presidential elections in the coming months.

After a disagreement with its leader, Madobe, over the contentious election in August 2019, the region would no longer be part of the Jubalands electoral process.

Last week, Somalia Prime Minister Mohamed Hussein Roble visited the town to pave for the planned reconciliation efforts after many months of political tension in the region that borders both Ethiopia and Kenya.
